Are Your Sleep Habits Affecting Your Weight?

Are Your Sleep Habits Affecting Your Weight?

In today’s society we seem to have so many things that occupy our time: social media, web surfing, reading, 24 hour news, friends and family, movies, catching up on your favorite show before the season finale. One thing that can suffer as a result is sleep. Perhaps we now have a reason to make sleep a larger priority. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology studied the relationship between sleep duration and obesity or weight gain in older adults aged 51-72 over an average of 7.5 year follow up. The study authors observed more weight gain in people who had 5-6 hours of sleep per night compared to those who slept 7-8 hours. Additionally, when looking at men and women who were not obese at the start of the study, participants who reported consistently less than 5 hours of sleep per night had an approximately 40% higher risk of developing obesity than those who reported 7-8 hours of sleep.

If you are in the Boca Raton area and have lost weight with the help of Dr. Shillingford’s lap band surgery (or sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries), we encourage you do all you can to keep the weight off for good.
